Drake Battle Tank - 29/01/2012

I have done a little more work on the Drake Battle Tank. I'm just adding the sponsons now. They are double sponsons - so 2 weapon mounts in each - that will be fitted with anti-personnel weapons. These weapons are controlled by the vehicle's Automated Fire System to defend against infantry, allowing the crew to focus on engaging enemy armour and fortifications with the tank's main weapon.

Drake Battle Tank - 23/11/2011

I have started working on the final version of my Drake Battle Tank for the Demiurg. This final model is a fair bit smaller than the prototype that I made up.

The main hull of the Drake Battle Tank has similar dimensions as the Land Raider (including sponsons) and has an upper-hull that extends higher.

The Drake is armed with a twin-linked ion cannon as standard but can be upgraded to a twin-linked Rapier Laser Destroyer (as shown). The Drake also has four defensive weapons, two on each side of the upper hull, that are fired by an Automated Targeting System. The Automated targeting System can pick separate targets with the defensive weapons but has a lower BS than the main weapon. I still need to make the mountings for the defensive weapons.

Here are some photos showing my progress.

And here's a few pictures to show the older versions that led to this final one.

Drake Battle Tank, Mk.II - 11/12/2009

I finally managed to get some more foamboard in stock. I ordered in a whole extra pack for myself. I got home, excited about getting more work done on the Drake Mk.II. I had one problem, I'd gone and lost my steel ruler! Luckily the one I use at work is my own, so next day I brought it home with me only to find the other one.

Here's the results of that evening's work, I now need to get my compass cutter out to make the turret.

Drake Battle Tank, Mk.II

I got rather bored at work on Monday, I got to the point where I was staring off into space, and decided to take a break from what I was supposed to be doing. in just a couple of minutes I'd blindly built this...

As you can see, I grabbed a spare bit of foamboard and threw this together. I decided very quickly to make a full scale version as the next Drake Battle Tank design. Fuelled by the enthusiasm for starting yet another project I rushed through the work I was doing, bought all of foamboard I had in stock and got started. Here's what I have so far...

I have stalled on this now as I bought all of the 5mm foamboard I had in stock. I will need to get more before I can continue.

Drake Battle Tank, Mk.I

Yet another project to go along with the codex I have been writing. One of the problems with the original Squats was that there was an aspect of their character, among many, completely missing from their 40K version, their big vehicles. With the level of vehicles now in 40K, such as the Necron Monolith, it is more than possible to have big vehicles. I created the Drake Battle Tank to demonstrate this aspect of their character.

The tank has one twin-linked main gun fired by the crew, and four secondary weapons fired by an automated fire system. Th armour on the front and sides is 14, and the rear is 13. I tried a few designs for the tank. Below is the first design I built up.

As you can see I had thought that having a weapon that could be used for anti-aircraft fire would add an extra level of usefulness and uniqueness to the tank. The problem was that the background for the Squats says that they only have 2 forms of AA defence. The Thunderfire AA Gun is the secondary anti-aircraft defence for the Squats, the primary defence is the awesome Overlord Armoured Airship. I changed the AA turret for a 'standard' turret design, still with the double weapons though.
