Focused Firepower Update

The lates update of the Focused Firepower rulebook has now been uploaded.

The IDF section has been overhauled. In particular, the way IDF Orders are given and received have been cleared up.
  • Clearly states that IDF Orders are resolved in the Movement Phase.
  • Clearly states that orders passed through a runner or radio can be given and received in the same phase.
  • Clearly states that IDF orders can be given to a weapon crew within the officer's own unit.
  • Officers may now directly order an IDF element close to them, should that unit not have line of sight.
  • When the orders are given, a marker is placed to indicate the target point, rather than chosing an element to fire upon.
  • IDF elements that have line of sight to the target may now 'adjust to target', reducing the scatter distance in subsequent turns.

In addition, a rule for automatic hits has been added to the AT fire section. The conditions are strict, but it means that you are unlikely to miss the target if your barrel is right against the enemy.

The ORBAT for the German Armoured Panzergrenadiers is also in progress and should be available soon. Vehicle data cards are also in progress. The British vehicle cards are available through the 6s2Hit forum, and the German ones will also be available there once they have been made.

Focused Firepower Official Website

Well the Focused Firepower website has been up and running for a while now, so I thought it was about time that I gave an overview of the game and what you can find on the website.

Focused Firepower is a tabletop miniatures wargame set during World War II. The system focuses on accurately recreating a realistic environment based on real world data, so that players can get a feel for how real battles were fought during the war. Of course this can only be taken so far in a tabletop game before gameplay is compomised, but I believe that the system has achieved a good balance. It is common for game systems to dedicate themselves purely to gameplay rather than attempting to simulate real warfare, the most popular systems follow such a pattern.

The game uses a 1:1 mechanic to maximise realism, meaning that what you have on the table represents the exact forces that would be present in reality. One man on the table represents one man on the battlefield, while in other systems one man could represent a whole section. Many systems mount a whole section on one single base, and such bases represent formations rather than individual units.

In Focused Firepower each soldier is mounted on their own base, with the exception being weapon crews such as a machine gun's gunner and loader, who are mounted together. The 'skirmish' style helps us in our endeavour to produce a more accurate and dynamic environment.

Focused Firepower is available to download completely free from the official website.

Of the website you will find the core rules, as well as the rules for the individual forces that have been covered so far. The information of the weapons covered is also included on the same page as the core rules.

The basic infantry companies for British, German, US and Soviet forces are available and are based on the official organisation of these forces, as will all future forces as they become available. The British Motor Company is the first additional force to be made available with its counterpart, the German Armoured Panzergrenadiers (SS) in the works.

We also aim to add new forces, such as the Italians, Hungarians and Finnish in the future. In addition we will eventually be including rules for battalion level support elements.

Alongside the main forces are rules for tanks and support vehicles.

There are many projects in the works for Focused Firepower, new factions, more comprehensive vehicle documents, more weapons and more of everything else.

Top priority at the moment is the Armoured Panzergrenadier (SS) OrBat. Also, I will soon begin construction of a 2 foot square diorama that will be used for photographs to be featured within the rulebook.

Focused Firepower - 05/08/2012

Just uploaded a new copy of the Focused Firepower core rulebook. I have made a number of minor changes to correct some issues that were highlighted during the demo game played at Games Hub Edinburgh's initial opening, including what happens when AT weapons target infantry.

The most major changes are to the terrain section. I have overhauled the terrain tables and added in sections describing a selection of different terrain types. One of the most important covering infantry occupying buildings.

Focused Firepower & Games Hub Edinburgh

Edinburgh will soon be getting a brand new gaming centre in the form of Games Hub Edinburgh. The Hub will be a gaming cafe with food and drink available to gamers. 6s2Hit will also have its first 'bricks and mortar' shop within the Hub.

Games Hub Edinburgh will be having a preview open day on 3rd August and its grand opening on 31st August. On both days, once I finish work at 6pm, I will be heading straight there to offer intro games of Focused Firepower.

With this goal in mind I have been spurred into a a burst of editing on the core rulebook. I have completely re-arranged the order the sections are in to bring the more important rules sections forward so that they are before all of the additional rules.

I have also done a lot more work on the wording of rules and making sure the right rules are in the right place, such as moving the rules for tank shock from the vehicle special rules section to the special orders section of vehicle movement.

I've also improved the look of the section headers, by replacing the solid grey boxes with brass plates.

Games Hub Edinburgh has a Facebook page, as does 6s2Hit.

Focused Firepower Core Rules Update

I have just uploaded the latest version of the Focused Firepower core rules. I've overhauled the organisation, cleaned up a few rules and added in a 'sequence of play' section.

I am pleased to announce that Focused Firepower now has an official website. The core rules and the ORBATs are available to download through the site.

While technically still 'work in progress' all the rules are there.

Focused Firepower is a great tabletop wargame system for World War II. The system is designed to be used with 1/72 scale models, which are readily available from model shops at low prices. A single box of Valiant Miniatures figures is enough for a decent sized game.

Best of all, the rules are completely FREE!

The Focused Firepower website is as http://www.focusedfirepower.co.uk/

Building a British Rifle Platoon for Focused Firepower

I give here details of how to use the Valiant Miniatures British Tommies box set to build a British Rifle Platoon from 1943-1944; the basic force you will need to play Brits in Focused Firepower.

Below is an image of the back of the box showing the figure poses that it contains.

Box Contents:
A - Officer
B - Corporal/Sergeant with SMG
C - SMG armed Trooper - Usually a Batman or Medic (with additional pack)
D - Rifleman
E - Rifleman
F - Rifleman
G - 3” Mortar Crewman (Not used)
H - Signaller with Radio
I - Officer/Spotter
J - 2” Mortar Crewman
K - Rifleman/Gunner - 2 will need to carry rifles.
L - Gunner with Bren Gun or PIAT (PIAT not used)
M - Gunner with Vickers MG (Not used)
N - 3” Mortar Crewman (Not used)
O - 3” Mortar (Not used)
P - Conversion Parts

Command Section Requires:
A x 1 - Officer w/ SMG
B x 1 - Sergeant w/ SMG
H x 1 - Signaller w/ SMG
C x 1 - Medic (SMG armed trooper with additional pack)
J x 1 - 2” Mortar
D/E/F/K x 2 - 2 Riflemen

Rifle Sections Require (Platoon has 3 Rifle Sections):
B x 1 - Corporal
K/L x 1 - Gunner
D/E/F/K x 8 - 8 Riflemen

The set also comes with a number of conversion and optional parts. Most of the conversion parts are alternative heads, including officers' hats and berets, but there is also an additional pack that I give to my Medic figures.

This one box can be used to represent pretty much all British and Commonwealth infantry en every theatre of World War II.

The set contains a lot of figures that are not required for the basic infantry platoon. Don't worry about wasting them. With 3 boxes you'll have enough platoons for a Company and their available machine gun platoons and mortar platoons.
